12-23-13 Afton comes into rescue from a Southern MI shelter, where he was a stray, who was not understood. The information given was that this dog needed a job, and was not doing well in the shelter. I find out after the transport, that he was scared during the transfer. Mrs Marsh brought him all the way to Remus, to make sure that he was safe and sound. It is not fair to the dog to just say that he needs a job, and not try to figure out why he is afraid. What I found, was that he was afraid of being shut in the crate. When he understood what the crate is, and that I was coming back for him, he settled in, and showed us a different dog today. Mr Afton is not vetted, so this is going to have the whole pack in a different state of mind with an intact adult male on the premises. His paperwork ages him at 6 years, yet let's see what our vet says. Today, he did come up to me with his docked tail trying to wag. He seems to be a quick study.
Not much information was given prior to the shelter call for help. We only had a few hours to coordinate, yet the shelter had him since 12-16-13 by the looks of it. His paperwork has "caution" notes about restraining him, yet that information was not passed along to the rescue or our transport volunteer. I do not appreciate, the shelter putting our volunteer in danger (again) by withholding important information.
1-1-14 Our vet ages him at 3-4 years old, due to his teeth not showing "wear" and the "stuff" on his teeth came off easily. The vet thought it was more of a "dog food" issue than an age issue.
Afton seems to have no training, at all. The collar and leash are new to him also. Afton gets SO SO excited when he sees me and dances around in his crate.
